Thanks to the ever-so-talented Lin-Manuel Miranda and the national tour of IN THE HEIGHTS, our awesome neighborhood is being introduced to the entire country. We have something special here and we are now being noticed on a national level because of the efforts of one man and his vision. IN THE HEIGHTS is not only on tour and receiving rave reviews but the still running Broadway show features Corbin Bleu of High School Musical fame until the 17th of August as Usnavi and on August 19th, Jordin Sparks will join the cast as Nina Rosario. IN THE HEIGHTS won 4 Tony Awards as well as the Tony for Best Musical in 2008. Not to mention that a movie version of the musical is in the works and will be directed by Kenny Ortega who directed Michael Jackson’s This Is It.

Check out their site: www.intheheightsthemusical.com/

Check out this flash mob that greeted Lin-Manuel Miranda out in LA recently.

Also, from our vaults, check Lin-Manuel Miranda, spitting some ill historical rhymes about Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, in front of Barack and Michelle.  From the Heights to the White house – you got to love it.

Have you ever gone to the Doctor and been recommended a diet of SOUL food?  Well, I am here to give you the green light and encourage you to do this as much as possible.  So what is SOUL food?  It might not be exactly what you think…SOUL food can be defined as foods that are:

Seasonal

Organic

Unprocessed

Local

As Uptown Collective’s wellness contributor, I will do my part to inform you of the hidden gems right in your neighborhood. The first treasure can be found abundantly in this area and is one of my personal favorites.  It is the mouthwatering and flavorful mango.  There are not too many things in life that can compare to this exceptional fruit.  While it may not be grown locally, it does encompass many of the other qualities that one should look for when going on the quest for SOUL food.  The mango is a tropical fruit that thrives naturally in warm climates. It appears on the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Dirty Dozen list at #5, giving us permission to shop for the conventional/cheaper (as compared to the organic) variety.  It also is a food that has not been processed in any way and is in its natural state.

I have come across this photo while doing research on the web numerous times. I’ve seen this image on t-shirts, event flyers and other graphics that have required that 80’s nostalgic feel and I had never really noticed the background until recently. A couple of months ago, I was doing research, looking for Ghettoblasters aka boomboxes for a design job I was working on and found this image again. I took a closer look and noticed that the picture was taken on my block. Dude holding the boombox is standing on 204th Street and Post Avenue. You can see the elevated 1 train and the bodega on the corner of 204th Street and Nagle Avenue. I didn’t grew up in this block, so I can’t identify the b-boy with the gazels but I can tell you one thing, dude was Fresh! Lee raw denim jacket and jeans, name plate belt buckle and a stereo that probably woke up the neighbors blasting, “Sucka MC’s.” Damn, I miss them days. I’m not sure who the photographer is, looks like the work of Jamel Shabazz or Martha Cooper. Either way, the snap shop is timeless!

Variety is reporting that “7-57 Releasing and Markedia Worldwide have acquired worldwide sales and U.S. distribution rights for Dominican action thriller La Soga.” Friend to the UC, Manny Perez, wrote the movie, produced it and acted in it. The movie will be released in the Dominican Republic & Puerto Rico on August 12th and will be released stateside on August 13th. La Soga is destined to become a cult classic; this movie was shot in the Dominican Republic and Washington Heights and will forever change the way folks regard Dominican cinema. Kudos, to our boy, Manny Perez, for this groundbreaking venture – you don’t want to miss this film.

It’s summertime and that means we’re in the season of blockbuster films. Its also the season of Hollywood studio fat cats getting fatter from record breaking ticket sales. But this particular Summer, in the shadow of these movie behemoths, “a little engine that could” Uptown filmmaker is having a hard time getting his film completed. This is a indie film, no mega star cast, no CGI effects, no national marketing push; this just a film that will base its success on a good story, quality script and fine acting.

SIEMPRE FIEL is the name of the film and Carlos Raul Peralta is the filmmaker. The internal battle that a young man has to go through when trying to decide whether or not he should join the Marines in a time of war, is the story. But where is the funding???

To help this homegrown film make it to the big screen, reach out to Carlos Raul Peralta at carlosraulperalta@gmail.com
